Emily Greene Balch receives the Nobel Peace Prize.
November 14, 1946
The first Nobel Prize winner from Boston and third American woman (after Jane Addams and Pearl Buck) to receive a Nobel Prize, she is honored for her life’s work fighting for peace and social justice, and cited for her efforts to create a “planetary civilization” which goes “beyond nationalism.” Too ill to travel, Balch receives the award at her Wellesley home in the spring of 1947.
